Running out of supplies, like body wipes and shampoo caps.
I was told he would be slowly weaned onto a solid diet, with thick liquids starting first. After just a few days in this place, they were feeding him three full meals a day of solid food - this was WAY too soon, and not following the care plan that was outlined for us. Being a stroke victim, he aspirated some of this solid food, which caused him to get pneumonia. This sickness debilitated him. He recovered from the pneumonia, but his kidneys then shut down. He had to be placed on dialysis (a setback that we were not expecting, nor is typical for stroke recovery).
Now let's talk about the staff. To put it bluntly, this staff is largely unprofessional and lazy. My dad would be left sitting in his own excrement for HOURS at a time. During one such occasion, I politely requested that he be cleaned up. I addressed a group of five nurses who were chatting around the main nursing station. They told me they'd "get to it." It took them an additional 15 minutes to enter his room. Not a single one of them was holding a chart, or speaking about nursing duties or patients. And yet, they still made him wait. One nurse was annoyed by my father's tendency to hit the nurse call button - their solution was to tie the remote control with the call button BEHIND HIM, so it was out of his reach. This was pure insanity as my father had a trach in his throat and he could not call out for help. Thankfully, we caught this on one of our visits, and it never happened again.
Very caring. Courteous. As soon as I press the call button, the staff is always quick to respond. Besides being helpful, the staff also takes time to get to know you as an individual and goes out of their way to address any other concerns that may arise. The environment is very well-maintained.
Neither bothers me at all.
Do not consider placing your loved one in this facility. Please allow me to elaborate, so you can understand what we went through. My 65-year-old father had a stroke. He was treated at Cleveland Clinic's Neuro ICU until he was completely stable, then was transferred to this Select Specialty Gateway facility on the 7th floor of St. Vincent's Charity Medical Center. Upon leaving the Cleveland Clinic, my dad was doing very well. Spirits were high, health was good, and he was improving every day. My father spent the next two months in Select Specialty, and everything went downhill - FAST.
This story has a happy ending. My father was finally granted a transit to the Cleveland VA, as he is a veteran. He has been there for only 3 weeks. In that time, he has been eating honey-consistency food, he has had his trach removed from his neck, and his kidney function has returned so he is no longer on dialysis. On top of that, he is smiling again and he wants to go through rehabilitation to get back on his feet. Now, I'm not a doctor. But I don't think it's mere coincidence that he started to recover the second he was not under the care of the staff at Select Specialty Gateway. I truly mean it when I say, both my mother and I were scared to death that he was going to die in that wretched environment.
The food is great too.
The care and compassion and the overall treatment from everyone is wonderful. People are not only doing their jobs, they really care. People actually care about the patients. It is very impressive. You don't find this every where. People will always go the extra little bit - are you OK, Do you need anything else, are always asked before leaving the room. Everyone is kind and personable. The nurses, the doctors, the people who clean the rooms. I feel closest with the nurses and aides - they especially go above and beyond.
That's another issue - my mother, who is retired, was able to stay with him almost every single day for five hours (or more) at a time. She arrived once to discover he had a fever of 104.5 degrees. She had to scream at the staff to come take his vitals, where they discovered the extremely high temperature and began treatment. What if my mother hadn't gone in that day? Exactly when were they going to catch this and help him?
Of course, I'd rather be at home but if I medically need to be in a facility, I will choose this one.
Short staffing - less frequent lately.
During his two months stay, his level of care was so awful that I literally watched my father deteriorate before my eyes. He started to lose his will to live, he was so miserable. Our insurance company had to demand that a progress report was sent to them from Select Specialty Gateway. When they received the report and saw that he had been on a steep decline, they insisted that he be moved to another facility. Yes, that's right. THE INSURANCE COMPANY DIDN'T WANT TO PAY FOR THIS LEVEL OF CARE ANYMORE. As my father's health declined, he entered into such a poor state of health that the doctors would not sign off on him being moved. So we entered the ultimate catch-22: he was too sick to move him out of the very place that was making him sick.
There are two problems that do arise on occasion.
My Docs are in almost every day! EV-VER-Y day! St. Vincent Charity Hospital is just downstairs - very handy.
I implore you - DO NOT put your loved one in this facility. Thank you for reading.
The staff is the number one reason I like it so much. They are always asking if I need anything and they are friendly and comforting - they feel like friends. PT and OT help a lot and get I one on one treatment specific to MY needs. I've NEVER felt warehoused.
I am very happy in my second 8 week stay in this facility. I would have refused any other place - In fact I walked out of the last such place I was sentenced to. I'm in Select Gateway as I type this on my laptop.
The rooms are mostly single and that's a big plus for myself. They are in the midst of remodeling right now and it will be exciting to see it finished.
