My daughter has made friends with her fellow students who come to study and board at the school from as far away as France, Russia and the Virgin Islands. She's also made friends with students from other states in the U.S. and with other children who are closer neighbors to us in Northeast Ohio. The school is a small one, but the students and staff come from all over the globe.
Not only is community stressed within the school, but students are integrated into the community of the city. My daughter helped with the ice rink on Wade Oval this last winter, worked in the Cultural Gardens along Martin Luther King Drive, and will help with Parade the Circle as an ambassador of the school. She's also been active this year with the school's soccer team, talent nights and more.
My child's personality and strengths are encouraged to develop via small class sizes and a high level of interaction with her teachers. Her teachers saw she had a strength in mathematics, so they designed her calendar so she could complete not just one advanced math class into her schedule, but two!
MHS prepared me for a wonderful life, got me into a prestigious school in the Mid-West, and gave me hands-on experience in the real world through a 4-year internship at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Our youngest daughter was a member of the founding class at the Montessori High School at University Circle. Right from the beginning, MHS was a very special place. The founder, David Kahn, assembled a particularly talented, innovative staff, and together they created a school where adolescents' personal, intellectual, and academic skills are fully addressed. Knowing MHS was offering the Internationale Baccalaureate diploma gave my husband and I confidence that our daughter's acceptance at a competitive college would not be compromised. The Montessori High School exceeded our expectations in every area. Since we can't take credit, I hope it's okay to say that my husband and I often remark that our daughter is more mature, creative, resourceful, perceptive and intellectual than we are! And, as it turned out, College admissions officers were intriqued by our daughters' unique educational experience. She was offered 5 merit based scholarships, and was admitted to top colleges including the University of Virginia, the University of Richmond and Colorado College. In order to believe how special this place is, you need to visit, meet the Head of School, Nate MacDonald, and see the enthusiasm with which their students approach work, learning and life (and make sure you see Michael Waskis math class!).
I am an alumnus of the Montessori High School At University Circle and completely adored all four of my years there. The faculty and staff are very responsive and really listen to what the students have to say.
MHS is a beautiful and small high school. The campus is comprised of some very charming and beautiful mansions along Magnolia Street.
We are so incredibly lucky to have the Montessori High School at University Circle here in Cleveland! This unique program truly honors the interests and developmental needs of adolescents. It's a gem.
It's close to many major cultural institutions in the city. It's so close that my daughter is now independently visiting and walking to the library at Case Western Reserve or the Cleveland Art Museum after school to meet friends or work on assignments.
I heartily recommend it to all adolescents.
My daughter attends the Montessori High School at University Circle. We are very happy with the school; dedicated faculty and staff, great kids, nice community. The IB program is quite rigorous.
